"The selling point of the product is the product itself"

If that is really so, why do fashion labels endorse top celebrities and models to market their goods ?
How did the Ipod managed to attain cult status and outsell their counterpart creative products ?
Why do mass selling car companies from the likes of Toyota, Honda and Renault participate in Formula 1 ?

I'm not saying that quality of products wouldn't sell at all, but its the marketing and exposure of the product itself to the masses thats captures the consumers' awareness .. and that my dear, generates revenue.

snort.

this entry only encapsulated the capitalistic streak which i am against in the first place!

"no matter how good a product is, it won't sell if it doesn't market itself well." I wonder what did u really mean when you make that statement, but you did come across concluding the success of a product is determined by its marketing.Did you mention anything about the value of the product?

That was what i was sniggering about when you seem to discount the roles of quality and workmanship in your argument. Surely, any self deserving SMU student wouldn't take pride in thinking that its "market value" is a product of its marketing gimmicks! Surely it is not the marketing that makes the student, but the quality of the education; and i would go further on to suggest the aptitude of the students which enables them to transit smoothly from a student to a contributing adult.

Is mass market reception the ultimate goal in your perception? Is revenue everything in your consideration? If those factors are heavily weighted, wouldn't that suggest a capitalistic nature in your perception? To me, a capitalist is one who know the price of everything but the value of none. I suppose in this case, you would probably find a product which is not mass marketed or has received little public exposure, inferior to those which are pasted across billboards?

not all consumers go for face-value, otherwise, cult-brands would have a time making a name for themselves. knowing consumers make good purchasing decision - try removing the fluff to identify the real thing.
